PMP Certification - Top Tips For Becoming a Certified PMP Manager

To obtain the PMP (Project Management Professional) certification, there are a number of requirements that you must fulfill. The first requirement relates to your academic education. At the minimum, you must have a bachelor's degree or other equivalent four year degree course. The second prerequisite is on experience and this is where a lot of people seeking the PMP certification often get stuck. You must have at least 4500 hours of project management experience in either one of the five process groups.

The number of project management hours is so important in the PMP certification process that having a high number of hours (at least 7500 hours) exempts holders of a high school diploma from the bachelor's degree requirement. The five project management process groups in which experience counts towards the PMP certification are project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closure.click here to download PMP EXPERIENCE CALCULATOR

The next prerequisite for certification is at least 35 hours of classroom-style training sessions related to project management. You will be required to provide supporting documentation for not only this prerequisite but the also the requirement on academic credentials and project management experience.

Having fulfilled all the above listed conditions, you then need to sit for and pass the PMP examination. It comprises of 200 multiple choice questions. The exam can be taken in hand written answer format or as a computer based test. The computer based score is often the most preferred when available as the examinee learns whether they passed or failed almost immediately after sitting the exam. As at 2009, the minimum score required to pass the examination is 61%.

The level of personal planning and preparation for the PMP certification examination plays an important role in passing the examination. The handbook considered the course's primary reading material, the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), is over 200 pages long. Add to this the additional auxiliary texts that you would be well advised to read too and you start to clearly see the amount of time that successfully sitting the exam requires. Ensure you also set aside at least $555 USD if you are a non-PMI member or $405 USD if you are already a PMI member, this being PMP certification fees. As with many professional credentials today, retaining the PMP certification is not automatic. Holders must attain a minimum number of professional education hours in order to be recertified. The minimum requirement is 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) with the term PDU being similar in meaning with the more familiar term CPE (Continuing Professional Education) as used in other disciplines.

To count towards PMP certification, a PDU is deemed as one hour of a planned project management education session.
